Person County, N.C. — A gunman opened fire on a Person County Sheriff's candidate campaign sign in his own front yard.
It happened on Monday night around 9:30, according to candidate Keith Daye.
Daye, a Democrat, said he and his family were home at the time. The bullet holes are visible through two signs in photos posted on social media.
The Person County Sheriff's Office is investigating what happened.
Daye detailed the ordeal on his campaign Facebook page, noting he's had issues with people stealing campaign signs throughout the campaign.
Having spent decades in law enforcement, Daye said he knew what was going on as soon as he heard it.
"My wife, Pam, and I had to crouch down in our home while we waited to see what the outcome would be. Neighbors immediately called to be sure we were ok; they heard the shots as well. The next morning, I found bullet holes in the campaign sign in my front yard."
Daye said if he were to win, he would become the first Black Sheriff in Person County. Daye said the act won't deter him in his run for sheriff. In fact, seeing the sign as it is motivates him to finish his mission.
"It doesn't intimidate me or put fear in me," Daye said. "We're trying to make history here in Person County and these are some of the obstacles that we have to face."
Daye will face Skeet Wilborn, the Republican nominee, in November. Wilborn said he condemns the actions taken against Daye's signs, and that Daye and his family are in his prayers.
