Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi was omitted from the 30-man list of nominees for the prestigious award. It's the first time since 2005 that the Argentina great didn’t make the short list. Messi edged out Poland striker Robert Lewandowski for the Ballon d’Or last year but wasn’t nominated this time after an underwhelming first season at Paris Saint-Germain. The 35-year-old forward also won the prize in 2019 — it was not held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Neymar also missed the cut this time. Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappé, Karim Benzema, Erling Haaland and five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo were all included, as were Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.
Sepp Straka didn't have much reason for optimism at the start of the PGA Tour's postseason. He had missed the cut in six straight tournaments. And now he has the early lead after 36 holes in the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Straka opened with a 64 and birdied his last three holes of the second round for a 66. He was one shot ahead of Denny McCarthy. Among those playing in the afternoon is Tony Finau, who is one of golf's hottest players. There's also Scottie Scheffler. He's No. 1 in the world but needed a good round to make the cut.

The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to one-year contracts with defenseman Caleb Jones and forward Philipp Kurashev. Jones and Kurashev were restricted free agents. Jones’ deal carries a $1,350,000 salary-cap hit, and Kurashev’s contract is worth $750,000. Training camp begins on Sept. 21. The 25-year-old Jones set career highs with five goals and 10 assists in 51 games in his first season with Chicago. Kurashev, 22, had six goals and 15 assists in 67 games last season.
MINNEAPOLIS — Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday and will be held out of team-related activities until at least Tuesday.
The Tennessee Titans have a competition for the job backing up Ryan Tannehill. They also want to see rookie Malik Willis throwing more. Coach Mike Vrabel pulled Willis two plays into their first drive of the third quarter after the quarterback scrambled instead of throwing in a 23-10 loss Thursday night to Baltimore. Willis showed off his legs running for a touchdown. He also had a 48-yard pass play. Vrabel said Friday they wanted Willis to throw and the rookie didn't. Vrabel says he's sure Willis will rip it the next time he has a chance.
Bobby Wagner is still getting used to the fact he’s now working with Sean McVay, not against him. After five years of trying to shut down McVay’s offense two or three times per season for the Seattle Seahawks, Wagner is now making the Los Angeles Rams better. The Rams signed the 32-year-old Wagner to be the game-changing inside linebacker they’ve decidedly lacked in recent years. But they also signed the six-time All-Pro for the impact he’ll have across the organization, and the signs are already showing.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins has tested positive for COVID-19 and won't play in the team’s first preseason game. Coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed the diagnosis at practice. Cousins was absent for a second straight day after feeling ill and being sent home. Cousins has “very minimal” symptoms, according to O’Connell. Sean Mannion and Kellen Mond will split time in the exhibition Sunday at Las Vegas. Cousins was unlikely to play much if at all if he wasn’t sick. There are no other quarterbacks on the roster.
If Antonio Conte wants a reliable indicator of how far his Tottenham team has come since last season, he couldn’t ask for a better test than Sunday’s trip to Chelsea. Tottenham lost four times in four meetings last season against Conte’s former club, so a win at Stamford Bridge would send a clear message that Spurs have taken a big step forward after a first full offseason under the Italian coach. It is the first meeting of the season between two of the “Big Six” teams, with both hoping to show they are ready to join champion Manchester City and Liverpool in what has been a two-horse race for the title in recent years.

Two Real Madrid teammates made the three-man shortlist for the UEFA player of the year award for last season, while no Liverpool player was included. Champions League winner Madrid is represented by competition top scorer Karim Benzema and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Courtois was the standout in Madrid's 1-0 win over Liverpool in the final. Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne completed the list. De Bruyne plays with Courtois for Belgium. The coaching nominees are Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti, Jürgen Klopp of Liverpool and Man City’s Pep Guardiola. Winners are announced Aug. 25 at the Champions League draw.
Tyson Fury has decided to “walk away” from boxing only three days after saying he was returning to the sport. Fury turned 34 on Friday and posted a message on social media saying “Massive thanks to everyone who had an input in my career over the years & after long hard conversations (I’ve finally) decided to walk away & on my 34th birthday I say Bon voyage.” That seemingly puts Fury back into retirement after he announced on Tuesday that he was returning to boxing in order to set up a fight against Derek Chisora. Fury did not give a reason for his apparent change of heart.
Two Belgian strikers are likely to be in focus when the Italian league season starts Saturday. Returning Inter Milan forward Romelu Lukaku has already shown what he can do in Serie A but compatriot Charles De Ketelaere is something of an unknown quantity for city rival AC Milan. De Ketelaere scored a hat trick in his first start in a friendly for Milan and the 21-year-old will be looking to hit the ground running when the Rossoneri kick off their title defense against Udinese on Saturday. Inter starts at Lecce which is the same team Lukaku made his debut against three years ago. José Mourinho’s Roma kicks off its season on Sunday at Salernitana and Juventus and Napoli play on Monday.
The World Cup in Qatar kicks off in 100 days and Human Rights Watch on Friday has again urged FIFA and the host nation to improve compensation for migrant workers and their families. The rights group calls for comprehensive remedy for deaths, injuries, and wage theft for workers who worked on World Cup-related projects like stadiums, transport and hotels. Qatar has spent tens of billions of dollars on infrastructure since being picked by FIFA as host in 2010. It has also faced intense scrutiny of its labor laws and treatment of hundreds of thousands of workers needed for construction. Many came from South Asia.
Barcelona has sold off even more of its club assets in the hopes of meeting the Spanish league’s financial rules so Robert Lewandowski and its other signings can play in the season opener. Barcelona says that it has agreed to sell 24.5% of its Barça Studios production hub for 100 million euros ($103 million). All told, the heavily indebted Catalan club has earned some 870 million euros ($895 million) after selling parts of its production hub and Spanish league television rights. But it has yet to register new players one day before Barcelona opens its season against Rayo Vallecano. The new injection of cash should help its financial standings with the league and increase the chances that Lewandowski and six other players will be able to play in the competition.

Greek police have arrested 15 fans of Israeli soccer club Maccabi Tel Aviv after finding them in possession of smoke bombs, flares and firecrackers before a Europa Conference League match against Aris.
