Trib's take: This one is going to sting the Vikings, who were the better team at the line of scrimmage and made their share of big plays. But three failed trips inside the red zone and losing the turnover battle 3-0 was too much to overcome against a FBS opponent on the road. But we like the swagger the Vikings played with. They tried for a touchdown from inside the 2 on the final play of the first half (and were stopped), they called a flea-flicker pass from out of their own end zone that went for 48 yards, and on defense they blitzed and played a lot of man coverage. If they can keep playing with that aggressive, confident mindset, this will be an entertaining season for Vikings fans. A D V E R T I S I N G | Continue reading below
Big picture: There was a lot to like about the Vikings' performance, particularly the way the defense played. The competition gets tougher next weekend with a trip to Husky Stadium, but — except for the final score — Portland State should walk away from this game feeling good about the way it competed. Quarterback Dante Chachere was 24 for 37 for 270 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in his first start. He showed he can move the team and made some very nice throws when he set his feet. He also showed his inexperience with a couple of costly interceptions, but will give defense trouble with his mobility. PSU outgained SJSU 395-288, had a 99-yard touchdown drive and got a big performance from its defensive front — all encouraging signs.
Oh, yes!: What can we say about Beau Kelly. The 5-9 senior was money, making nine catches for 133 yards and a go-ahead touchdown on a third-down play in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Nate Bennett also had a nice night with five catches for 76 yards, the highlight the 48-yard leaping catch on the flea-flicker call with the ball inside the PSU 1-yard line. Oh, and the defense made seven sacks (three from sophomore rover/DB Tyreese Shakir).
Oh, no!: The turnovers. Portland State coughed up the ball once on an interception in the red zone, once on a muffed punt when Andrew Van Buren ran into Kelly and then touched the bouncing ball, and finally on a throw by Chachere over the middle on which he didn't see the linebacker. Losing the turnover battle by three and failing to get any points from three trips inside the opponent's 15 is going to be tough to overcome against any team, let alone a FBS outfit.
Next game: Portland State at Washington, 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 (Pac-12 Washington/Pac-12 Now app),
