THRIFT SHOP: The Johnsonville Methodist Church Thrift Shop, located 22 Bridge St., Johnsonville, NY 12094 is open from 9-12 every Wednesday and the first Saturday of each month. Closed on major holidays. Look for our sign at the corner of Rte. 111 and Rte. 67. We have a great selection of adult and children’s seasonal clothing, vintage, special occasion and career clothes, jewelry, shoes, purses, toys, linens, puzzles and games, household and decorative items. We have more than 1,000 books in our well-organized book room.
SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 27-28 State St. in downtown Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 6 to 7 p.m. each Thursday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. GIANT PUMPKINFEST: The Saratoga County Chamber Of Commerce, the Saratoga Springs City Center, and the Saratoga Farmers Market is proud to host our 7th Annual Saratoga Giant PumpkinFest Weigh-Off this September 24th! Giant pumpkin growers from the Northeast will again compete at this Festival to find the biggest pumpkin of the year. In 2019, we had 40+ giant pumpkins and a crowd of 10,000 people in attendance. Last year, we were still able to weigh off these pumpkins safely and transported them to locations for families around the county to view for the month of October! Mark your calendar now for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 24th, and plan to bring the entire family to the Saratoga Springs City Center Parking Garage! The Saratoga Giant PumpkinFest is a free family friendly event. GENEALOGY EVENT: September 2022 Meeting for the Capital District Genealogical Society, Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. CDGS meetings are presently held on Zoom. Topic: Approaches to Writing Your Family History. Members of the CDGS Write Your Family History group have been working with writing coach Paul Lamar to craft compelling stories from their family history research. As genealogists, we know that the real interest in doing our digging is to make our ancestors come alive – to put meat on the bones of a skeletal chart. Paul will moderate a program featuring some of the writers in the group sharing a selection of their best stories. 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: The Hoosick Township Historical Society invites everyone Sunday, September 25, 1 pm- 4 pm to an afternoon gathering celebrating Emmajane Cottrell. CAPITAL REGION BUDDY WALK: After two years of Car Parades the 26th Annual Capital Region Buddy Walk will be returning in person on Sunday, September 25, to Schenectady Central Park, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to the walk there will be entertainment, arts and crafts, children’s activities, information booths, food and fun. Funds raised from the Buddy Walk support educational programs, social activities and health resources provided to individuals and families through the Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center at the Center for Disability Services. The local one mile walk is open to participants of all ages and abilities. Everyone is welcome! This year’s walk and festivities celebrate 26 years of the event as well as the achievements and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome! AUTUMN STROLL: Join the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation for an Autumn Sunday Stroll of historic Saratoga Springs. Thanks to an overwhelming response, the Foundation is pleased to present an encore presentation of “Mail-Order Houses of Saratoga” on September 25th at 10:30AM! Madison C. Squires will lead this tour, which features houses on East and Pinewood avenues. The tour highlights the “Kit House” era – a time when the average person could not only put a check through the mail, but order and receive an entire house as well. This tour meets at the northwest corner of Lake and East avenues. All Sunday morning strolls last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. Tours will be limited to 30 people and tickets must be purchased in advance. The cost per tour is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County has a pressing need for at last 10 volunteer reading mentors for the Everybody WINS! Power Lunch program at Van Rensselaer Elementary in Rensselaer as well as School 2 and School 14 in Troy. Everybody Wins! is an innovative reading and mentoring program that increases children’s prospects for success in school and in life. Power Lunch pairs elementary school children one-to-one with volunteers from nearby businesses, colleges and the community. Once a week, reading partners enjoy conversation together at the school, and the adult reads a book aloud to the child while he/she eats lunch. The murder of Mickey Kane, a taxi driver from Bennington, VT. took place July 26, 1930. Joe will tell the sorted details of this murder mystery that lasted for years. MEMBERANCE DAY: On Friday October 7, 2022, (Fried Dough Friday), Latham Knights of Columbus Members Judi Couch and Joy Meher are hosting a “Memberance Day” to Benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children-Springfield, MA. The event will begin with Children’s activities and games/prizes from 4 pm to 7 pm! Then 7 pm to close our DJ playing 50’s music for your dancing and listening enjoyment! Menu; hotdogs, hamburgers, sausage and peppers, Fried dough and more available for purchase. TROY CHOWDERFEST 2022: Explore the walkable district sampling chowder, soup, and other delicious treats from a diverse group of restaurants and purveyors at the return of ChowderFest on Sunday, October 9 starting at 12 p.m. The event is free to attend and will feature $2 four-ounce samples for purchase at all participating locations. There is no up-front cost or presale ticket required to enjoy ChowderFest, as all samples will be purchased a la carte. THE WAY WE WERE CAR CHOW: Downtown Ballston Spa will soon become a classic car enthusiast’s dream. The Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association has begun preparations for its 20th Annual “The Way We Were” Car Show taking place Sunday, October 9th on Front Street. The fall favorite event typically draws over 400 show cars and organizers are anticipating a large turnout for the milestone 20-year anniversary of the show. In addition to all of the cars and trucks, there will be food and merchandise vendors, a kid’s zone with a bounce house and activities, live music and a trophy presentation at the end of the day. ALBANY TRICK OR TROT PUMPKIN RUN: The City of Albany is excited to announce its first-ever Albany Trick or Trot Pumpkin Run 5K on Saturday, October 29th at 5:45 p.m. The Trick or Trot 5K is a great race for all ages, featuring a beautiful course through historic Washington Park and kicks off with an amazing fireworks display by East Capital Park, in front of City Hall. Participants are encouraged to dress up in your favorite Halloween costumes, as we walk & run through Albany and Washington Park. The race also features chip timing by Albany Running Exchange, age and gender based divisional awards, Halloween treats for participants and random prize drawings. Awards recognition and posting of results takes place at the East Capital Park following the race. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 6 to 7 p.m. each Thursday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services.
