October is just about two weeks away, and that means Domestic Violence Awareness Month is almost here. Throughout the month, Centre Safe aims to raise awareness and share resources via a full slate of events around Centre County.
This year’s theme, “#Every1KnowsSome1,” hopes to highlight the prevalence of domestic violence in communities across the country, Centre Safe said in a release.
“It takes a community to end violence. This October, we remember that #Every1KnowsSome1 who has been impacted by domestic violence, and that everyone can support survivors and work to break the cycles of abuse right here in Centre County,” Centre Safe wrote in a statement.
Throughout October, select streetlights in Bellefonte and State College will light up purple, the color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Local landmarks like the Centre County courthouse in Bellefonte and the Fountain Park gazebo in Millheim also will feature strings of purple lights. Additionally, Centre Safe will distribute decorative yard signs that display supportive messages, domestic violence statistics and the Centre Safe hotline number, 1-877-234-5050.
At its Oct. 4 meeting, the Centre County Board of Commissioners will officially proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Community members are then invited to attend a reception at the Talleyrand Park gazebo in Bellefonte from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On Oct. 20, community members are encouraged to wear purple to support domestic violence survivors. Those who participate also are encouraged to post on social media using #PurpleDay while tagging @CentreSafe to help the organization reach more people throughout the community.
Finally, an art display will rotate among all four Centre County YMCA branches to honor local victims of domestic violence. The exhibit, “Empty Place at the Table,” features individual place settings representing each Centre County resident killed by domestic violence since 1998, as well as information about their homicides and resources to support others and reach out for help.
“The Empty Place at the Table exhibit is a visual reminder of the deadliness of domestic violence and is a catalyst for social change,” said Dawn McKee, Centre Safe’s special projects coordinator. “We hope this exhibit not only honors and remembers those in Centre County who were murdered in acts of domestic violence but also creates a commitment from individuals and our community to actively work to end domestic violence.”
The “Empty Place at the Table” exhibit will rotate throughout Centre County on the following schedule:
More information on Centre Safe’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, including a full event list and shareable posters, is available on the organization’s website. Centre Safe’s social media pages, @CentreSafe on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, will also provide updates throughout October.
“Centre Safe is asking the Centre County community to join us all month long as we raise awareness, hold events, and share resources in person and online, so that victims and survivors will know without a doubt that they live in a community who supports them and is working to end abuse,” the organization said.
Dating back to 1975, Centre Safe works to empower survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Its services include free legal assistance, an emergency shelter and a transitional housing program.
