More than 2,000 purple yard signs can be seen all throughout Greater Cincinnati this weekend.
Elder High School's 100-year anniversary begins on Saturday and officials with the high school have coordinated a way for area graduates to display signs in their yards to kick off the school's yearlong centennial celebration.
Principal Kurt Ruffing, class of 1981, will be placing a sign in his yard Saturday morning. Ten other Elder graduates in his neighborhood will also be joining him by placing signs in their yards.
“This is a great way for our grads to show pride in our alma mater and to celebrate 100 years of Elder High School. I’m really looking forward to seeing these signs all over the west side and beyond," Ruffing said.
According to Ruffing, Elder's anniversary committee has been meeting since October 2020 to coordinate events planned for the Elder community to celebrate the 100th anniversary. Events include an open house in August, an arts weekend in September, a pep rally at Washington Park, attending a Reds game and an FC Cincinnati match and a gala dinner.

In 1912, the parishioners of St. Lawrence Parish in Price Hill persuaded their pastor to add a ninth grade to the elementary school. They then added a tenth grade in 1913. They named it Elder High School in honor of William Henry Elder, the second archbishop of Cincinnati.
Elder High School has since served as an all-male, college-preparatory high school in Price Hill.
