LAS CRUCES – About 1,600 students within Las Cruces Public Schools are graduating high school this year and each member of the Class of 2020 is being recognized with a yard sign.
"We purchased yard signs for each of you as a keepsake of your senior year," stated LCPS Superintendent Karen Trujillo. "Display them with pride and know that your community supports you and believes in you. Despite everything that has been taken from you this year, know that our faith in you and your ability to make an impact on this world is unwavering."
Kelly Jameson, spokesperson for LCPS, said high school principals have been on a mission to distribute the signs by either delivering them or distributing them at individual schools — all while practicing social distancing.

"Some schools handed them out right away, some schools are waiting until the graduation celebrations and some are getting them to their seniors as of this email," Jameson stated Monday. "It's been an ongoing effort over the last couple of weeks."
Jameson said principals wanted to show how much they appreciate their senior students who've had to adjust to staying home in their last few months of high school to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus.
"Their senior year has looked much different than anyone expected, and this was a creative way to support them and give them some additional recognition," Jameson said.

CW Ward, owner of House of Grafix, 800 W. Amador Ave., said he partnered with LCPS to help make the signs. He said he has made more 1,000 signs so far for four high schools.
"We are also doing custom ones for the kids," Ward said.
Ragged Apparel, 1900 S. Telshor Blvd. Suite D, also contributed to making signs for Mayfield and Oñate High School.
High school seniors have already been proudly displaying their special yard signs as some schools like Centennial and Oñate High School, have been surprising their class of 2020 with a drive-by parade.
Trujillo and principals will host a celebration for seniors on May 21 and 22. On those dates, graduates will convene in the parking lot of the Field of Dreams, stay in their vehicles, and drive by to receive their diplomas. The celebrations will be held in compliance with the state's distancing order.
A more traditional graduation ceremony is planned later in the year.
