CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jim Phillips is a true believer. If there was any doubt about it before, there was none left after Wednesday. At a time when not only his conference but college athletics in general is being pulled in new, odd directions by forces both benign and malignant, the ACC commissioner insists on fighting the good fight.

The Big Ten and SEC are dividing up the spoils, California schools are now about to be in a conference with Rutgers, football power has become a magnetic force attracting millions in television money at the expense of logic and the NCAA’s head-in-the-sand failure to proactively address the liberalization of athlete rights allowed reform to be forced upon it with predictable consequences.

Darren Clarke has a two-shot lead heading into the weekend at the Senior British Open. Clarke is chasing a maiden senior major title. He shot a a 3-under 67 in the second round to be alone atop of the leaderboard at 8 under. Clarke had two bogeys and a birdie on the front nine but an excellent back nine punctuated by four birdies. The New York Giants have signed defensive back Gavin Heslop and terminated the contract of offensive tackle Korey Cunningham with a non-football injury. The Giants announced the moves just four days before players report for their first training camp under coach Brian Daboll. Heslop played mostly on special teams in three games for Seattle last season. He made his NFL debut against Arizona on Nov. 21 and also appeared against Washington and Houston. Cunningham played in 12 games for the Giants last season as a reserve lineman and on special teams.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed winger Patrik Laine to a $34.8 million, four-year contract. The deal carries an $8.7 million salary cap hit through 2026. Locking up Laine long term was the last item on the Blue Jackets' offseason checklist after they surprisingly signed top free agent Johnny Gaudreau. Laine was a point-a-game player last season in his first full year with Columbus. The 24-year-old Finn has 184 goals and 158 assists for 342 points in 431 games NHL regular-season and playoff games with the Blue Jackets and Winnipeg Jets.

Paul Waring retained his two-shot lead at the Cazoo Classic on the European tour by shooting 2-under 70 in the second round. Grant Forrest, Jens Dantorp and Julien Guerrier all shot 69 and were Waring’s nearest challengers at Hillside near Liverpool in northwest England. Daan Luizing (68) was alone in fifth place a further shot back. Waring shot 63 on Thursday. He was 1 over for his second round after 10 holes as he struggled with a different wind direction but birdied three of his last eight holes. Waring was 11 under for the tournament.

Former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is still somewhat awestruck ahead of his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend. Ortiz helped Boston win three World Series titles and is just the 58th player elected in his first year on the ballot. He'll be joined on the dais by Era Committee selections Jim Kaat and Tony Oliva. Gil Hodges, Minnie Miñoso, Buck O’Neil, and Bud Fowler will be honored posthumously as part of the Class of 2022.

The NCAA has charged Tennessee with 18 recruiting violations involving allegations of illegal cash, gifts and benefits given under fired football coach Jeremy Pruitt. The school has 90 days to respond to the Level I violations. Pruitt and nine others were fired for cause in January 2021 when an internal investigation found what the university chancellor called serious violations of NCAA rules. Chancellor Donde Plowman had said Pruitt was responsible for overseeing the football program. Tennessee has been conducting an internal investigation since a tip in November 2020 about alleged recruiting violations. Also fired were two assistants and seven members of the recruiting and support staff.

Deshaun Watson reported to his first training camp with the Cleveland Browns not knowing how long he’ll be their starting quarterback. As he awaits word on whether he’ll be suspended by the NFL, the three-time Pro Bowler arrived at Cleveland’s training facility along with the team’s other QBs and rookies. The 26-year-old is facing a likely league suspension for violating its personal conduct policy following allegations by two dozen massage therapists in Texas that he was sexually inappropriate with them. Watson’s fate is being decided by a league disciplinary officer. Retired federal judge Sue L. Robinson has spent the past few weeks reviewing the case following a hearing and briefs submitted by the quarterback’s legal team, the NFL Players Association and league.

Iowa hired Lorenda Holston as assistant athletic director for diversity, equity and inclusion and Anthony Embry for the newly created position of athletics academic and diversity coordinator. The announcement comes as the university and head football coach Kirk Ferentz and others face a lawsuit by former football players who allege they faced discrimination and harassment from coaches and staff because they are Black. Holston previously worked in athletic department support positions at Purdue and Georgia Tech. Embry had worked in academic support in athletic departments at Coastal Carolina and the University of Portland. A trial is set for March 2023, with the former players seeking monetary damages and cultural changes inside the athletic department.

Two-time defending conference champion Alabama was predicted to win a third consecutive Southeastern Conference title in voting at this week’s SEC Media Days. Alabama beat Georgia in last year’s SEC championship game in Atlanta before losing to the Bulldogs in the national title game. Media picked a repeat matchup by selecting Alabama to win the SEC West and Georgia to win the East. Led by first-team quarterback Bryce Young, Alabama was the overwhelming pick to win the championship, receiving 158 votes. Georgia was second with 18 votes. Kentucky and Texas A&M were picked second in the Eastern and Western divisions, respectively.

The Miami Dolphins will be without cornerback Byron Jones and defensive back Elijah Campbell when training camp opens next week. Jones has been placed on the physically unable to perform list. Campbell is on the non-football injury list. Both moves were announced by the Dolphins on Friday.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner thinks fans should be free to express themselves at Formula One races because heated rivalries are common in sport. But he says there should be “zero tolerance” for the abuse and bullying witnessed at the Austrian Grand Prix. Fans used social media to make F1 aware of rampant harassment, sexism, racism, and homophobia in the grandstands of Spielberg two weeks ago. In an interview with The Associated Press, Horner says "any form of abuse or bullying, there should be an absolutely zero tolerance policy towards.” There has been boorish behavior at several races this season.

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch acknowledges last season’s relegation battle was “intensely stressful.” A preseason trip Down Under for the American and his squad has been more laid-back. Leeds now features two American players in midfielders Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams. But expectations are ramping up on all three Americans. A slow start could spell trouble for Marsch. The fans at Elland Road will be anxious to see what the club got for the combined $53 million in transfer fees spent on the United States internationals. Leeds hosts Wolverhampton in the season opener Aug. 6.

Colombian cyclist Miguel Ángel López has been suspended by his Astana team for his reported connection to a drug trafficking investigation in Spain. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will seek his 10th win in the $1 million Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park when he sends out Taiba to face seven rivals in the 1 1/8-mile race Saturday. If Taiba were to win, it would be Baffert's biggest triumph since returning from a 90-day suspension less than two weeks ago. The ban related to the disqualification of Medina Spirit in the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Taiba is the morning-line favorite. The field includes undefeated Jack Christopher, Florida Derby winner White Abarrio and Arkansas Derby winner Cyberknife.

Nelly Korda hit an approach to 3 feet and made the eagle putt at the last hole to take the clubhouse lead on 11-under par midway through the second round of the Evian Championship. The American says she barely slept ahead of a morning start to her second round that opened with what she described as 10 “stress-free” pars. The finish was better after she birdied Nos. 14 and 17 before the eagle at the par-5 No. 18 following a high fade off her second shot. The No. 3-ranked Korda shot 67 and was three strokes ahead of Hyo Joo Kim (66) after the morning wave.

Barcelona has sold a second package of its television rights to an American investment firm for an undisclosed amount as the Spanish club claws its way out of debt. Barcelona said Friday it had agreed to sell an additional 15% of income from TV rights from Spanish league games for 25 years to Sixth Street. That gives the investment firm a total of 25% of the club’s TV rights for La Liga games after Barcelona and Sixth Street struck an initial deal last month. Barcelona made public that the first deal for 10% of its TV rights was worth $210 million. It did not reveal the amount Sixth Street would pay for the next 15%.
