Roe v. Wade debate should include role of 'men' and 'sex': Letters

In the debate about overturning Roe v. Wade, I have not heard a word about “men” or “sex”.  It takes more than a woman to have a child and to raise it, i.e. once a child is protected at birth he/she needs food, clothing, and shelter among other things, like money for a bus for the end of the year school trip. In addition, some religions - like mine - don’t believe that life begins at conception but at birth. “Women's health care” is health care for all of us!

I would rather talk to Maggie Hassan, Chris Pappas, and/or most Democrats such as Cinde Warmington, the lone Democrat on the Executive Council in N.H., about this issue than Republicans such as Janet Stevens who voted with other Republicans on the Executive Council not to accept federal funds for women’s health care. The Democrats at least listen to what you’re saying. That goes for the State House and Senate members such as Rebecca Perkins Kwoka who are running for reelection as well! It matters who we vote for!

So, turn out to vote, especially if you believe that men and sex are involved in pregnancy and hopefully - raising a child. Vote Democratic up and down the ballot!

Biden's speech on Thursday, Sept. 1 will go down as one of the lowest moments in American history. For the first time in my memory, a sitting president impugns and denigrates half of the American voting public in front of a building where the foundation of our constitutional republic was established.

Those who voted for Biden because he was supposed to be a "uniter and someone who would cool down the divisive rhetoric" have many reasons to feel bitterly disappointed.  His vitriol has set up his political enemies so that they may now be blamed for any act of violence just before the midterm elections.

I study history and the first thing that came to mind after hearing this awful speech was the fire at the Reichstag building  in Germany in 1933. I encourage the readers to look up the history of what happened then as that incident was used to eliminate opponents and consolidate political power. History is repeating itself.

The question becomes: Are acts of hatred and violence against neighbors who had Trump yard signs and bumper stickers now justified? Will those who have "No hate allowed here" signs be the first ones to attack or will they reject hate from all sources, including those they are politically aligned with?

I wish Biden could speak to our enemies as harshly as he did to his own constituency. This is indeed a sad point in history when people are seen as enemies because they wear a symbol calling for Making America Great Again.

Governor Sununu vetoed eight bills this session, including HB 1454. That’s the bill that will help ensure that any new landfills built in NH will be built in locations that minimize the risk of contamination of our state’s waterbodies and drinking water supplies from PFAS and other toxic chemicals.

HB 1454 passed in both the House and Senate on an overwhelmingly bipartisan basis. Governor Sununu’s HB 1454 veto message was extremely unconvincing, with arguments that seem to come straight from the solid waste industry’s talking points.

It’s too bad that the Governor passed up an opportunity to sign HB 1454 into law. It would cost the state nothing, complements perfectly NH’s solid waste management goals, helps protect our tourism economy, and most important of all would help prevent additional communities from suffering from PFAS contamination.

Please take a few minutes to look at CBS News’ recent piece on the dangers of PFAS contamination (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jwwu5KchDcU&t=25s). In the last minute (starting at 10:12), you’ll see the pain that a Maine dairy farmer bears because he couldn’t do anything to save his farm from PFAS contamination, and his disappointment that he let down the generations of his ancestors that worked that land.

You have a chance to do the right thing. By voting to override the veto of HB 1454, you can help prevent another PFAS contamination disaster in our state. You can help make sure it doesn’t happen on your watch and doesn’t happen to the good people of NH’s Seacoast region.

I am a Seacoast business owner and father of two young children. As a lifelong NH Conservative, I’m appalled that the HB 1454 veto may stand because the Legislature can’t put NH residents’ health and welfare above the self-interests of the solid waste industry.

Many Republicans, and former Republicans like myself, are concerned about the extreme positions that many Republican candidates are espousing. A number of these with alarming views have recently won primaries in states across our country. Their followers are motivated and these extremists could get elected in November. If you are registered as “undeclared,” please vote for Democrats on Primary Day.  (You can sign the book on your way out of the polling place to revert back to Undeclared if you wish.)

Mainstream Republicans in Washington today have been silenced by the leadership of Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell. There is no place in today’s Washington for a non-radical Republican. If you doubt this, please, watch any network national news at 6:30 p.m. for one week.

Many current and former Republicans will be voting for Democrats in Tuesday’s primary and we will be doing so again in November. We need to send representatives to Washington (and Concord) who are not afraid to tell the truth. It is more important to vote for those who will condemn violence, support law enforcement and American institutions (FBI, CIA, Justice Department), than it is to vote for the party to which you may have been aligned your whole life. Character and moral leadership matter.

Poll Hours: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Questions? Phone City Clerk at 603-610-7208

Once again, Governor Sununu talks out both sides of his mouth. One side says “I have no problem with Free Staters.” The other side says “... these people (who want to privatize the Gunstock recreation area and secede from the United States) are crazy.”

He knows better. The Free Staters never made their goals secret. Their manifesto says they would come to a small state, take it over, then reduce the government to nothing and secede from the US. They don’t always say that when they’re running for office, but they don’t hide their long-term objective either.

Sununu knew what Free Staters were about when he campaigned to help them get elected to the the legislature. He knew they would not approve of Belknap County running a successful recreation area. He knew they would try to wreck it. They told him so.

Sununu helped put them in office. He is responsible for the problem because he knew when he helped them get elected that this is the kind of thing they would do. They may be crazy, but wrecking government is what the Free Staters are about. Chris Sununu knew it. They told him what they want to do. But he still helped them take over the Belknap County delegation. Now he claims to be surprised that they are doing exactly what they said they would do. No sale.
